Scope of Job
The Chakrabarti Lab in the School of Integrative Biological and Chemical Sciences (SIBCS) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Scholar to work on a recently funded grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will work on dissecting the roles of different RNA modifications in regulating responses to abiotic stresses in crop plants using Sorghum as a model. The UTRGV is a Hispanic-Serving institute located in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. The PI’s lab is on the Edinburg campus. Edinburg is located in South Texas and is a low-cost city compared to many cities in the US.
Description of Duties
  • To conduct wet lab experiments, including setting up stress experiments, performing routine molecular biology experiments, and preparing samples for various types of next-generation sequencing.
  • Independently carrying out bioinformatic analyses of genome-wide data on RNA processing, RNA modifications, mRNA stability, and epigenetic modifications.
  • Mentoring graduate- and undergraduate students in the lab.
  • Regular lab maintenance, taking care of experimental plants in the growth chambers and greenhouse.
  • Publishing data in high-impact journals, participate in grant writing, and preparing reports for the funding agency.

Required Education
Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biotechnology, Plant Biology, or other related fields from an accredited university/institute.

Required Experience
A solid background is required in bioinformatics/computational biology, including handling genome-wide transcriptional, post-transcriptional, epitranscriptional, and epigenetic datasets.
Preferred Experience
  • Candidates with prior experience with the Linux/UNIX system, HPC (High-Performance Computing) system, and with Python and R programming languages will be given preference.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience in direct RNA sequencing using Oxford Nanopore technology, RNA metabolism and gene editing. 
  • At least one first-author publication in related fields in a high-impact journal. 
  • A self-motivated, hardworking individual with the ability to work both independently and in a group.
Equipment
Use of personal computer and proficiency in software and research statistical applications.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/research environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

The position is for 3 years, initial appointment will be for one year and will be renewed annually based on the performance.
