Posting Summary

The Yang Lab at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School seeks a qualified and passionate Postdoctoral Fellow for systems biology and immunology research. Our lab brings together diverse experimental and computational activities to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis and treatment of chronic and infectious diseases.

This position will focus on cell signaling and metabolism in innate immune cells as they pertain to bacterial infections and antibiotic treatment. There will be opportunities for the successful applicant to choose from a variety of projects, as well as develop new ones. The initial contract is for 1 year and may be renewable annually for up to 2-3 years, based on satisfactory performance and progress towards career goals.

This position requires a Ph.D. or M.D. in a biological and/or computational discipline at the time of appointment. The ideal candidate possesses meaningful immunology experience in cellular and animal studies. Programming skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python, R) are a plus, but not required, as there will be ample training opportunities in bioinformatics, network modeling and machine learning. Interest and experience in tuberculosis is also a plus, but not required, as there will be several projects to choose from.

The successful applicant will receive hands-on career mentorship and training in both experimental and computational techniques, as necessary for their work. The Yang Lab is ideally situated in the International Center for Public Health Building, home to the Center for Emerging and Re-Emerging Pathogens, Public Health Research Institute, Department of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, and Global Tuberculosis Institute at Rutgers. The successful applicant will have a breadth of access to equipment for high-throughput and live-cell assays, such as an in-lab Nikon confocal microscope, Seahorse XFe extracellular flux analyzer and a BioTek Cytation, as well as shared equipment in neighboring labs and core facilities.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Perform immune cell primary isolations. Perform tissue culture experiments with primary immune cells and with mammalian cells lines. Sterile technique required.
  • Performs immunological and molecular biology assays including, not limited to, pathogen co-culture, cytokine
    profiling, flow cytometry; DNA/RNA/protein purification, PCT and RT PCR, CRISPR, genetic cloning; DNA/RNA/protein gel experiments; single cell characterization by microscopy; -OMICs characterization by nextgeneration sequencing or mass spectrometry; phenotypic characterization by rodent infection, plate-based assays.
  • Assists in the development and testing of new assays including chemical and genetic screens, next-generation sequencing, and/or microscopy. Perform high-throughput live-cell microscopy imaging experiments with fluorescent reporters.
  • Perform network modeling, machine learning and/or bioinformatic analyses of experimental data.
  • Works safely in a BSL3 environment, compliant with biosafety protocols.
  • Assist in training graduate students and technicians and performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Assist in laboratory organization, including the ordering and stocking of supplies for laboratory efficiency and cost effectiveness. Submits purchase recommendations, to the Principal Investigator, of equipment and supplies.
  • Assists the Principal Investigator with the preparation of grant applications and manuscripts.
  • Assist the Principal Investigator in written and formal presentations to industrial collaborators and funding agencies.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • MD or PhD in immunology, microbiology, physiology, cell biology, biomedical engineering, systems biology, computational biology, data science, or related biomedical science discipline with 0-3 years of postdoctoral training.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Research experience in immunological assays with mouse or human macrophages.
  • Molecular biology experience in DNA/RNA extraction, PCT and RT PCR, genetic cloning.
  • Programming fluency and prior experience in systems biology / computational biology / machine learning / bioinformatics / image processing techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience with rodent infection models.
  • BSL3 experience working with virulent CDC classified tier 1 select agents and M. tuberculosis.
  • Previous experience with microscopy, next-generation sequencing, mass spectrometry, CRISPR experiments.

  • This position involves prolonged standing, walking and sitting, as well as use of laboratory equipment.
  • Must perform complex procedures and demonstrate manual dexterity.
  • Lifting of 20 pounds to a height of 6½ feet.
  • Must be available to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays when necessary to meet deadlines.
  • Must be willing to work with rodents.
