Purpose

Project MALES invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow (Postdoc) appointment that will be an integral member of the research project South x West Texas Research Initiative: Improving the educational outcomes of male students of color in Texas postsecondary institutions . This position will support the implementation of a research-in-action partnership between the Project MALES/Texas Education Consortium and ten South & West Texas postsecondary institutions (e.g., two- and four-year institutions) across various rural and metropolitan regions in Texas.

The research initiative is housed in Project MALES and the Texas Center for Equity Promotion (TexCEP) at The University of Texas at Austin. TexCEP supports and conducts high quality applied culturally-centered research, disseminates evidence-based information, and trains future professionals regarding the nature, origins, contexts, effects, and elimination of inequalities in education and health. Specifically, Project MALES (Mentoring to Achieve Latino Educational Success) is a comprehensive research team focused on conducting social science empirical research focused on the educational experiences of collegiate men of color.

This position presents an opportunity for a post-doctoral scholar in the following key areas:

  • To conduct research in a comprehensive state-wide research study

  • To collaborate with institutional leaders, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers

  • To have all expenses paid to travel to institutional sites and national research conferences (i.e., only if a conference proposal is accepted).

  • To learn and work with nationally recognized scholars in higher education research

  • To develop essential project management skills

  • To co-publish or sole publish academic research journals and public policy documents

The Postdoc will work directly to Dr. Victor Saenz, Professor and Associate Dean at UT Austin, and Dr. Emmet Campos, Director of Project MALES/Texas Education Consortium at UT Austin, and Dr. Luis Ponjuán, Director of Project MALES/Texas Education Consortium Research Activities and Strategic planning and Associate Professor at Texas A&M University.

This position is funded for one year with the possibility of continuation based on performance and funding.


Responsibilities

  • Research

    • Conducting large scale qualitative research projects

    • Recruiting interview and focus group participants (e.g., students, staff and faculty)

    • Conducting semi-structured individual and focus group interviews

    • Working with qualitative software programs to help develop codes and thematic analysis

  • Research Project Management

    • Excellent interpersonal skills to engage with each institutional sites

    • Conducting institutional campus site visits

    • Team management and interpersonal skills with doctoral students

    • Ability to act as a liaison between Project MALES and TexCEP teams

  •  Academic and Research

    • Extensive experience with different qualitative research methods (e.g., case study, phenomenological, ethnography, document analysis, etc.)

    • Prior experience with writing and publishing for peer-reviewed academic journals

    • Prior experience with creating conference proposals for education conferences

    • Prior experience with working on teams to co-write academic journal articles

    • Prior experience with using academic research disciplines to develop potential theoretical frameworks.

    • Prior experience to work independently and creating a research agenda within a research team.

    • Working knowledge of basic quantitative skills


Required Qualifications

Ph.D. or Ed.D. received within the past 3 years, with the ability to work independently and as a team, and excellent oral and written communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications

Doctorate in the Education and/or the Social Sciences

$65,000

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
