Description

 

The Heart Institute, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and Department of Pediatrics, University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) has availability for postdoctoral fellow with an expertise in human and animal physiology, cardiac phenotyping techniques such as rodent echocardiography, electrocardiography, stress and behavioral tests to study cardiac diseases in a large cohort of mouse colonies. The research is funded by NIH to study genetic, molecular mechanisms, and pathogenesis of human cardiomyopathy and involves genetic, molecular, biochemical and physiologic studies in animal models and cell cultures. The selected candidates will be actively involved in all aspects of these studies. Knowledge in basic molecular biology and functional genomics is desired. As the study involves multidisciplinary cardiovascular and genetic research, we offer excellent training opportunities, creative and innovative work environment and interactions with many other laboratories and core facilities, including the sequencing center, bioinformatics and genomics cores, and animal facilities.   Essential Responsibilities:

1.      Perform physiological and stress in vivo tests and experiments on an independent

or with minimal guidance basis. We will provide initial training on performing clinical and

physiological phenotyping in mouse colonies


2.      Being responsible and collaborative with the Principal Investigator and senior researchers

in the planning, developing and performing research projects; recording and timely reporting

results and progresses of the projects


3.      Provide technical guidance, advice and support to research staff and technicians.


4.      Maintain positive working relationships as a team player with respect to staff, peers

and senior investigators, personal and work ethics, good communication and positive problem

solving skills  


General Knowledge and Skill

1.      Ability to develop and design the experimental strategy and approach according to the

research problems and outline the most significant results

2.      Ability to develop new methods and techniques in experimentation as needed

3.      Ability to direct and organize work of technical support personnel

4.      Ability to prepare and present reports and presentations on research projects

5.      Ability to write manuscripts and research proposal

 



Qualifications

 

1.      Ph.D. in biology or other basic sciences and/or M.D. degree(s)

2.      Knowledge in cardiac physiology and general physiology (human and mouse)

3.      Prior experience in clinical and functional assays such as performing and analyzing echocardiography (human or mouse), ECG and other cardiovascular     physiological tests

4.      Prior experience in tissue/cell culture, general immunological and/or protein chemistry (immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, IP)  techniques is             desirable

5.      Fluency and strong oral and writing skills in English is required
