Description of Work Unit
The Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology (MIP) Department, housed within the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, is comprised of over 400 individuals who share a common passion for solving some of the most important human and animal health problems today. Research programs include those related to arthropod-borne and emerging zoonotic infectious diseases, retroviruses, prions, mycobacteria and the diagnostic investigation of naturally-occurring animal diseases. A leader in education, MIP provides the only microbiology undergraduate degree program in Colorado, a graduate program that provides training in a number of cutting-edge disciplines, and several specialized veterinary residency training programs. As such, faculty in MIP have the opportunity to mentor PhD students entering the program through the traditional competitive admissions process as well as veterinary students admitted through the combined PhD/DVM or residency programs. With diversity, equity, and inclusion as one of our strategic pillars, the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences is committed to developing a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive climate where diverse students, staff, and faculty can thrive. CSU, MIP, and CVID are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion from trainees to faculty. Diverse individuals are encouraged to apply to this position.
Within MIP, the Center for Vector-borne Infectious Diseases (CVID), formerly known as the Arthropod-borne and Infectious Diseases Laboratory, is a longstanding multi-disciplinary research and training center within the Department of MIP that serves as a cornerstone for infectious disease research and education at Colorado State University. The successful candidate will be housed within CVID at CSU’s foothills campus. https://vetmedbiosci.colostate.edu/cvid/
CVID researchers have been successful in defining mechanisms of pathogen persistence and transmission, and developing new surveillance, control, and prevention strategies for vector-borne and emerging zoonotic diseases. World-class facilities, including BSL-3 laboratories and large insectary complexes, provide an outstanding scientific environment for researchers inside and outside CSU to study pathogens in vertebrate hosts and arthropod vectors. CVID investigators house one of the only bat breeding colonies in the United States for use in experimental research in bat-borne viral diseases.
