Description of Work Unit	Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The NREL is a research and teaching unit at Colorado State University with a mission “to ensure the sustainability of the Earth’s ecosystems through the generation and application of new knowledge.” The department’s interdisciplinary, ecosystem research promotes collaborations among disciplines and across fields of expertise at CSU and throughout the world. As a soft-money research unit, this role is critical to ensure adequate funding to sustain its vital role in the research community both locally and across the globe.
Position Summary	The Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory seeks a postdoctoral researcher in the field of soil carbon biogeochemistry to work as part of a larger team on several related projects intended to better understand soil carbon storage using biologically-adjacent compounds, such as decomposition-resistant l-sugars. This research theme, supported by grants from the Keck Foundation and the Grantham Foundation, engages several units across campus, including the NREL, the Ecosystem Science and Sustainability department, the Materials and Molecular Analysis Center (part of the CSU Analytical Resources Core), the department of Chemistry, the WM Keck Metabolism Collective and others. The primary goal of this position is to advance our understanding of the persistence of rare sugars and other biological compounds in soil. To that end, the researcher will (1) develop and carry out experiments to test persistence of biological compounds, (2) develop and test methodologies for crediting CO2 offsets in collaboration with e.g., Verra, (3) develop and carry out experiments to assess capacity of organisms to transform biologically-adjacent compounds, such as rare sugars, and (4) express conclusions from the above in numerical models. This is an open pool posting and applicants will be reviewed as positions become available. This position is initially for two years with the potential for renewal based on performance.
Required Job Qualifications	Candidates should have completed PhD degree in Soil Science, Ecology, Ecosystem Science, Biogeochemistry, or other closely related field at time of application. Previous experience working with soil organic matter cycling and stabilization Experience studying persistence/decomposition of organic compounds Sound understanding of soil carbon biogeochemistry Demonstrated potential for independent thought, experimental design, and research. Expressed interest in synthesizing data and ideas in the form of numerical models Familiarity with C offset methodologies
