Job Overview

 The University of Cincinnati (UC) Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (EECS; https://ceas.uc.edu/academics/departments/electrical-engineering-computer-science.html) in the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow in electrical engineering and computer science. We seek candidates in the area of information theory, communications, machine learning, reinforcement learning, and/or artificial intelligence.

The incumbent will assist the principal investigator conduct research and/or analyze research data and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of the University of Cincinnati. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee.

EECS is dedicated to educational excellence and developing and sustaining premier research programs with national and international recognition. The chosen candidate will be expected to contribute (at both the graduate and undergraduate level) to the department’s educational and mentoring mission of preparing students to become high-performing professionals in the workplace. The chosen candidate will also be expected to contribute to the advancement of research missions within the department and college.


Essential Functions
  • Conduct research experiments in the area of information theory, machine learning, reinforcement learning and artificial intelligence.
  • Gather and analyze data and develop new ideas that promote current research.
  • Prepare data summaries, reports, manuscripts and presentations of research results.
  • Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentation.
  • Assist in writing proposals in the above or allied areas.
  • Keep informed of developments in field to maintain and enhance professional expertise.
  • Lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies, as needed.
  • Lead a research team of one or more graduate students.
  • Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities. 
  • Play an active role in seeking career and research advice, both from the faculty supervisor and from other faculty members as well. 
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need. This job description can be changed at any time.

Required Education

Prior to the appointment, the successful candidate must have earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science.


Required Experience

Must have established research experience/focus in information theory, communications, machine learning, reinforcement learning and /or artificial intelligence.


Additional Qualifications Considered
  • Demonstrated research experience in allied areas.  
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills 
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team 
  • Ability to write grants and proposals broadly in the area of information theory and communications.
