Description of Work Unit
The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition has 20 faculty members and 23 research associates and administrative staff, ~600 undergraduate majors in nutrition, dietetics, food science and hospitality management, 70 M.S. graduate students, and 14 Ph.D. students. Department research is supported by federal grants from NIH and the USDA, as well as foundations and industry, and two endowments that support a faculty chair and the Lillian Fountain-Smith Nutrition Conference hosted by the department each year. Research has focused on childhood obesity, community nutrition among limited resource audiences, molecular and metabolic nutrition targeted at chronic disease prevention, bioactive food components, and food safety. The department’s Extension faculty is responsible for numerous creative, high impact educational and engagement programs throughout the state, including EFNEP and FSNE. A new MPH program focus area in Public Health Nutrition within the School of Public Health provides new collaborative opportunities. The department offers an accredited B.S. dietetics program and an M.S. coordinated dietetic internship program. With the overall growth in the department, there has also been growing faculty and student diversity. Position Summary
The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Colorado State University is looking for a motivated post-doctoral fellow to work on an NIH-funded collaborative project across 3 laboratories (Cardiovascular Integrative Physiology Laboratory; Intestinal Health Lab; and the Functional Foods and Human Health Lab). The general aim of the project is to examine the connection between the gut microbiota and cardiometabolic health. Studies are performed in cell culture models, small animals, and human subjects. Applicants should be proficient in at least one of the following areas: clinical cardiovascular outcomes (e.g. ultrasound measurement of cardiovascular structure/function); cardiovascular outcomes in mice (e.g. endothelial function, aortic stiffness); culturing and experimentation with CACO, HAEC, HUVEC, or primary mouse or human-derived endothelial cell lines.
Duties of the position include conducting and analyzing experiments within the scope of the project; training and mentoring graduate students; participate/assist with writing and preparing manuscripts and grants; other duties as assigned. The postdoc will have opportunities to develop independent research questions within the scope of existing projects.
