Position Description: | Apply |
The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) invites applications for a position as a post-doctoral fellow to study the effects of mechanical forces on the development of vascular smooth muscle cells. The position is open to experimentalists in the areas of cell biology, mechanics, physics and computational biology. The aims of the project are to determine how mechanical forces regulate vSMC phenotype switching using a human vSMC surrogate model of perinatal development. The mechanical properties and response of these vSMCs to stress/strain are to be assessed using platforms that enable single cell analyses and stretching of cells in both 2D and 3D geometries. Once “tuned” to maximize internal force development, the model systems will be used to identify key regulatory factors and to model regulatory networks predicted to control hPSC-vSMC responses to increased stress/strain to decipher how mechanical forces affect transcriptional mechanisms responsible for phenotype transitions in vSMCs. The research will take place under the co-supervision of Dr. Kenneth R. Boheler (BME and Division of Cardiology) and Dr. Daniel Reich (Department of Physics and Astronomy) of JHU. We seek intellectually ambitious candidates with initiative and a demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively and independently. Review of applications will begin from June 30, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. Applications should be submitted to Academic Jobs Online (https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/21843 ) and consist of a curriculum vitae, publication list, and a description of past research (limit 2 pages) and future plans (limit 2 pages). Applicants should also arrange to have three letters of reference submitted through academicjobsonline.org. Applicants should have a PhD before their anticipated start date. Appointments are for one year, renewable annually based on satisfactory performance, for a total of up to four years. A competitive salary and benefits will be available to a successful applicant. JHU is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer, and it welcomes applicants from women and members of underrepresented groups. Questions may be directed to Dr. Ken Boheler at [email protected]. Application Deadline: Thursday, June 30, 2022 |
