Job Description


The Unsteady Fluid Mechanics and Acoustics Laboratory in the Kevin T. Crofton Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering at Virginia Tech is seeking a postdoctoral associate in the area of computational fluid dynamics. The position is concerned primarily with numerical simulations of unsteady vortex flows and their interactions with other coherent flow structures and surfaces.

The successful candidate will enjoy regular interactions with program sponsors, technical experts at national laboratories, and international collaborators. The postdoctoral associate will also benefit from the multidisciplinary and collaborative research culture of the Center for Research and Engineering in Aero/Hydrodynamics Technologies (CREATe) led from within the Department. Opportunities for teaching and service-related activities for bespoke professional development will be available.

Position is restricted to US Persons on the basis that ITAR controlled software access is needed. US Persons, as defined under ITAR for this position, includes US Citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents and other types of protected statuses (asylum, refugee, amnesty). 22 CFR 120.62.


Required Qualifications

• An earned doctoral degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or related discipline. PhD must be awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of one year eligibility remaining.
• Experience with conducting original research using computational fluid dynamics.
• Expertise with programming languages such as C/C++/Python/Fortran or similar.
• Restricted to US Persons on the basis that ITAR controlled software access is needed.


Preferred Qualifications

• Expertise with the modeling of vortical flows
• Expertise in data science techniques
• Experience with high performance computing on large-scale supercomputers
