Job Description


The Propulsion and Energetics Laboratory in the Kevin T. Crofton Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering at Virginia Tech is seeking a postdoctoral associate to work in advanced manufacturing and characterization of energetic materials. The position is primarily in process development in the fabrication of energetic materials using advanced manufacturing techniques. Additionally, the successful candidate will be responsible for the characterization of these materials through a variety of experimental techniques. The selected candidate will work in an interdisciplinary team involving multiple departments throughout the university and with our industrial partners. The position is at the university’s main campus in Blacksburg, VA. Opportunities for teaching and service-related activities are available to successful candidates.


Required Qualifications

• Doctoral degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or related discipline. PhD must be awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of one year eligibility remaining.
• Experience with energetic materials
• Experience with additive manufacturing
• Ability to work effectively in a team
• Strong communication and writing skills


Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with laser-based combustion diagnostics
• Strong experimental background
• Experience with electronics and controls
