Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is immediately available in Dr. Katrina Groth’s Systems Risk and Reliability Analysis (SyRRA) lab in the University of Maryland’s Center for Risk and Reliability (CRR). The SyRRA lab and CRR are housed within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, home to the top Reliability Engineering graduate program. The SyRRA lab conducts rigorous basic and applied research into risk assessment and decision making under uncertainty for complex engineering systems. Primary application areas are energy systems, including nuclear power plants, hydrogen fuel cell infrastructure, and gas pipelines.
Candidates may choose from existing projects and will also work with the PI to propose new directions. On any given day, the selected applicant may be asked to:
  • Mentor and supervise graduate students
  • Write proposals to secure funding
  • Manage research projects funded by the federal government
  • Analyze data and develop models using multiple types of data and information
  • Document results in presentations and reports to various audiences
  • Develop and deliver courses
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • Ph.D. in engineering with expertise in one of the following disciplines: Reliability Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil or Structural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, or closely related field.
  • High level of academic success in undergraduate and graduate studies


Experience:

  • Coursework or experience in probability, statistics, reliability analysis.
  • Experience with one or more of the following: probabilistic risk assessment, machine learning, and/or Bayesian methods.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; Proficiency preparing high-impact visual presentations, written reports, and the ability to clearly and concisely communicate engineering information to a variety of audiences.
  • Familiarity with one or more of the energy systems studied in the SyRRA lab.
  • Strong publication record demonstrating original thinking and ability to conduct impactful research.
