Job Description:

We are seeking for a post-doctoral associate in the Intelligent Comparative Oncology Lab directed by Dr. Jon Kim in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida (UF). The Kim lab focuses on cancer biology and immunology research projects, utilizing cutting-edge biotechnologies such as iPSC modeling, CRISPR screening, and multi-omics data analysis. They also develop novel diagnostic and clinical applications in the field of comparative oncology deploying AI and machine learning.

The best-qualified candidate will have dual experiences and related skills in tumor immunology and bioinformatics/computational biology. However, candidates with experience in one area (either immunology or computational work) who are eager to acquire and advance skills in the other area will also be highly welcome.

The post-doc will focus on tumor immunology projects, with a special emphasis on defining the role of oncogenic genes on immune and metabolic reprogramming. This work includes the development of novel translational approaches for cancer therapeutics through interdisciplinary collaborations between veterinary oncology and the UF Health Cancer Center. Specifically,

The Kim lab’s primary interest is pediatric cancers such as brain tumors, osteosarcoma, and rhabdomyosarcomas, but it is not limited to these.

The Kim lab is currently leading multiple projects in machine learning and deep learning on medical image and genomics datasets. Thus, the candidate will have great opportunities to participate on AI and machine learning applications for cancer research. While computer programming skills are not required, they are a plus. Candidates interested in learning and advancing programming skills using Python and Linux-based supercomputing will be preferred.

Kim lab has the privilege to establish dog clinical trials at the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital, providing translational medical research. Kim lab’s research is multi-disciplinary and collaborative, offering opportunities for career development of post-doc candidates.

All lab members can have access to high performance computing resource, HiPerGator supercomputer at the UF (https://www.rc.ufl.edu/about/hipergator/ ).

The positions are well suited for individuals who can work independently with high self-motivation. Post-doctoral associates are expected to develop new research avenues in collaboration with the PI and contribute to existing projects in the lab. At the same time, we aim to train the next generation of scientists as the lab is trainee-centered and surrounded by diverse expertise in the college and across campus including the University of Florida Health Cancer Center.

Expected Salary:

$50,000 - $60,000; commensurate with experience

Minimum Requirements:
  • PhD, and/or MD, DVM in all biology field including immunology, molecular and cell biology, genomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, biomedical engineering, or closely related field
  • Published scientific papers in international journals in the field of cancer research, immunology, metabolism, or closely related field
  • Great team-work capability: strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team
  • Independency, Creativity, and Scientific Criticism: designing experiments, generating new hypotheses and developing independent research project
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in machine learning and deep learning (Python; Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, etc)
  • Experience in next-generation sequencing analysis and bioinformatics
  • Experience in development of new bioinformatic tools
  • Highly organized, determined, and self-motivated scientist
