Postdoctoral Associate

Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in chemistry, materials science or chemical engineering, or a closely related field in hand by July 31, 2024. Experience in crystallography.

Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates are expected to have a strong background in
quantitative structure analysis based on X-ray (or neutron) scattering data (e.g. powder diffraction, pair distribution function (PDF), single-crystal), preferably with experience in in situ/operando characterization and large user facilities such as synchrotrons. Experience in characterization and synthesis of metal-organic frameworks or other crystalline porous solids is ideal.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Associate will assist the Principal Investigator
Dr. Karena Chapman Please visit Chapman Materials Research to learn more about our group. The incumbent will conduct research and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University. They will perform research to understand the structure-function relationships in metal-organic framework materials for energy-relevant applications in CO2 capture and catalysis.

We are looking for a highly motivated and creative individual who is interested in developing a mechanistic understanding of the function and performance of energy-relevant materials using X-ray crystallography. The candidates must have interest in employing advanced X-ray scattering analysis (PDF, pXRD) to study the fundamental aspects of the structure-reactivity relationships. We welcome candidates with backgrounds outside of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), provided the candidate has interest in developing skills in working with MOF. The postdoctoral fellow should possess good verbal and written communication skills in English, the ability to work productively and independently in a collaborative environment, strong problem-solving skills, and be willing to provide mentorship to junior members of our laboratory. Regular duties will include:

Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, conduct research experiments in the field of characterization of functional metal-organic framework materials.

X-ray scattering experiments of metal-organic frameworks under reactive conditions using synchrotron- and laboratory-based instruments.

Quantitative structural analysis based on powder diffraction and pair distribution function data.

Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations.

Lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies as needed.

Mentorship of graduate students and/or undergraduate students.

Collect and analyze data, including periodical/literature search and utilizing specialized skills in related fields to analyze the collected data.

Other duties as assigned, which may include attending Scientific Conferences and Meetings.
