Job Type: FullTime

Postdoctoral Associate

Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in oceanography or closely related field in hand by the start of the appointment.
Proficiency in at least one programming language. Research experience in analyzing climate change impacts on marine systems. Wet lab experience, preferably with marine larvae and/or shellfish.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with global climate models. Graduate level course work in physical oceanography and fisheries ecology. Comprehensive understanding of marine invertebrate ecophysiology. Experience with oceanographic and/or fisheries modeling. Strong quantitative skills, specifically spatial statistics/modeling.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Associate will assist Principal Investigator,
Dr. Bassem Allam , in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. This position will contribute to a two-year New York Sea Grant-funded project investigating the impacts of climate change on larval dispersal of continental shelf bivalves. This position will lead laboratory experiments that assess climate change impacts on larval behavior of bivalve mollusks. The incumbent will use data from the lab experiments, among other sources, to calibrate and execute biophysical models that simulate larval transport, and ocean indicator models that quantify climate change thresholds of species of many trophic levels throughout the New York Bight. This is a great opportunity for a creative and dynamic researcher whose interest is in further developing programming skills and bivalve / larval ecology.

Responsibilities will include:

Plan and conduct larval dispersal modeling, including model calibration, merging dispersal models with climate/ocean models, and associated statistics.

Carry out wet lab experiments, in a team setting, with duties including experiment husbandry/maintenance, measurements of larval response, and measurements of carbonate chemistry.

Establish ocean indicator models that quantify climate change thresholds of species of many trophic levels throughout the New York Bight.

Write and submit research publications in scientific journals and progress reports to funding agencies.

Other duties as assigned, which may include attending Scientific Conferences and Meetings.

Special Notes:
The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

The project will be based at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at Stony Brook University, however, the project involves a large, collaborative team including scientists at Rutgers University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Downeast Institute, and will involve travel to at least one of these institutes for time periods of more than one month. This position requires seasonal relocation to coastal, rural Maine (with paid housing).
