Job Type: FullTime

Postdoctoral Associate

Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
Ph.D or MD/Ph.D (or foreign equivalent) in hand by the start of the appointment. Prior experience in ultrafast THz spectroscopy, and the field of condensed matter.

Preferred Qualifications:
At least one first-author paper accepted for publication or published in a peer-reviewed journal by the time of application.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Associate will assist the Principal Investigator Dr. Mengkun Liu in the department of Physics and Astronomy

The Mengkun Liu group at Stony Brook University (SBU) is looking for motivated, diligent and initiative postdoctoral applicants. The group is interested in studying the transport and optical properties of quantum materials including superconductors, topological materials, chiral materials, and two-dimensional systems at cryogenic temperature and in high magnetic fields.  The research to be performed by the postdoctoral researcher will combine cryogenic scanning probe techniques and ultrafast THz optics to study a wide range of complex phenomena that can lead to new applications in the area of quantum information.

The Postdoctoral Associate will be responsible for developing and managing a high-throughput ultrafast THz scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope (THz-SNOM) that works in a cryogenic environment and high magnetic field. This position also requires the ability to work in a highly collaborative environment with team members having a broad range of scientific and technical backgrounds and levels of experience. In addition, this position will involve training and management of undergraduate or graduate students, development of new proposals, and day-to-day management of scientific collaborations. The researcher will be encouraged to lead independent projects resulting in high impact publications, present at conferences and workshops.

The Postdoctoral Associate will perform research in experimental condensed matter physics in collaboration with the PI.  In particular, the incumbent will be expected to participate in the investigation of quantum materials using cryogenic s-SNOM and study the low temperature properties of chiral magnetic materials, strongly correlated electron systems, and two-dimensional materials. The incumbent is expected to be familiar with the main features of the next generation of closed-cycle or continuous flow optical cryostat and ultrafast spectroscopy.

The incumbent will be evaluated for creativity, quantitative skills, and capabilities to clearly present the results of work with scientific papers and seminars.

Duties:

Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the research group.

Present results of research at conferences and workshops.

Creatively generate new ideas to approach research topics to explore; maintain the cryogenic system and cooperate with the collaborations between the PIs.

Assist PI with preparation and submission of applications for external research fund.

     Other duties as assigned
