About the lab:

The Schreiter lab is part of the Molecular Tools and Imaging research area at Janelia. We aim to develop molecular tools that enable new biology. We often apply directed evolution, structure-guided design, and high-throughput functional screening to arrive at molecules with new or improved function. We collaborate closely with biology labs at Janelia and elsewhere to demonstrate the utility of our tools in model organisms such as mice, zebrafish, and fruit flies, and use them to tackle important biological questions.

About the role:

We are seeking postdoctoral associates that are excited about developing new molecular tools and applying them to challenging biological questions. You will collaborate closely with scientists across many disciplines in a dynamic research environment. Some ongoing projects in the lab include:

  • Hybrid “chemigenetic” approaches to fluorescent biosensors (paper , paper , preprint )

  • Molecular integrators and history reporters (paper , paper )

  • Fluorescence lifetime probes for quantitative readout of physiology (preprint )

  • Voltage indicators (paper , paper , paper )

  • Bioluminescence approaches for monitoring physiology non-invasively

What we provide:

  • A competitive compensation package, with comprehensive health and welfare benefits

  • One-on-one mentorship relationship with the lab head

  • Opportunities for close mentoring relationships with other group leaders and senior scientists across the Janelia Research Campus

  • Generous training and travel opportunities to scientific workshops and conferences

  • Optional affordable on-site housing

What you’ll do:

  • Handling one or more independent research projects to develop molecular tools, generally through protein engineering approaches, and apply them to biology, often in collaboration with other labs at Janelia.

  • Freedom to pursue creative ideas that bring to bear your previous experience and current/future interests

What you bring:

  • A PhD in chemistry, molecular biology, or a related field

  • Experience with molecular biology

  • Creative ideas to develop or apply molecular tools

Diversity, equity and inclusion are important values at Janelia, and candidates should be dedicated to ensuring kindness and inclusion in their interactions with the scientific community and with other employees at Janelia.
