We are seeking a motivated, passionate postdoctoral scientist to join our growing and dynamic team in the Yale Center of Genomic Health and Department of Genetics, Yale School of Medicine. Our lab uses computational and functional genomics methods to determine how genetic variation in our mitochondria underlies health and disease. This work has implications across rare and common diseases, and other processes such as development and aging. We also prioritize translating our research into practical tools that benefit research and clinical communities.
We are looking for a computational postdoctoral scientist to spearhead the development and application of methods for assessing the functional and clinical impact of genetic variation, focusing on mitochondrial genomics, and highly value diversity of backgrounds in our team. We seek candidates who can commit to a multiyear appointment, reviewed annually. The start date can be flexible, and as soon as January 2024.

Responsibilities
- Design, plan, and perform research analyses on large-scale genomics datasets
- Develop new algorithms and pipelines for analyzing human genetic variation
- Prepare high-impact manuscripts for publication and conference presentations
- Attend and present at lab meetings, journal clubs, and departmental seminars
- Contribute to the mentoring of students and junior scientists in the lab
- Assist in the preparation of grant proposals
- Maintain code and pipelines, and support lab operations as needed
- Positively contribute to our collaborative, communicative, and collegial lab culture
Mentoring & Professional Development
The Lake Lab has a strong emphasis on mentorship and values the opportunity to train future leaders in genetics research. The Principal Investigator will work with the successful candidate to develop and implement a mentorship plan tailor-made for their goals, interests, and needs, and provide ongoing support for the advancement of research and career goals via regular meetings. Dedicated mentorship will also be provided for fellowship applications, preparation of manuscripts, scientific presentations, and developing skills for independence.

Qualifications
Candidates should have or be close to obtaining a PhD in either genetics, genomics, computational biology, bioinformatics, or a related field.
Experience with programming languages and the command line interface is required. Experience with one or more of the following is desired: machine learning methods, statistical genetics, large-scale genomic analyses, cloud computing, and single-cell and or bulk sequencing analysis.
The ideal candidate will also demonstrate:
- A high level of drive and initiative, and track record of impactful research outcomes
- Experience writing manuscripts published in peer-reviewed journals
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Eagerness to learn and establish new methods, and good problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Desire to contribute to the mentorship of students and junior scientists in the lab
- Experience in, or strong understanding of, human genetics research.
