Position is for one year tostart with extensions contin gent on performance, funding, and needs of the lab.

A postdoctoral scholarposition is available in Dr. Carolyn Coyne’s laboratory at Duke University inthe Department of Mo lecular Genetics and Microbiology. We study the mechanismsby which patho gens cross cellular barriers, focusing on both thegastrointestinal tract and placenta. We utilize human primary cells, tissue andstem cell-derived organoids, and in vivo animal models to define the mechanismsby which viruses such as enteroviruses cross cellular barriers and howteratogeni c pathogens including Zika virus (ZIKV), Listeria monocytogenes, andToxo plasma gondii cross the placental barrier. Available projects use a rang eof microbiology, cell biology, and immunology techniques and will also involvecutting-edge sequencing techniques and bioinformatics. Specific p rojectscovered in this position include the defining the mechanisms by w hich placentaltrophoblasts resist Toxoplasma gondii infections.

The term of theappointment is limited (see Section 5 of the Postdoc Policy for length ofappointment). The appointme nt involves substantially full-time research orscholarship, and may incl ude teaching responsibilities. The appointment isgenerally preparatory f or a full time academic or research career. Theappointment is not part o f a clinical training program, unless researchtraining under the supervi sion of a senior mentor is the primary purpose of theappointment.

The Postdoctoral Appointeefunctions under the supervision of a mentor or a department at Duke University.The Postdoctoral Appointee is expected to publish the results of his or herresearch or s cholarship during the period of the appointment.
