The George Washington University (GW) invites applications for a 2-year, full-time, Postdoctoral Associate position. The incumbent will join a research team led by Sandra Soo-Jin Lee (Columbia University), Janet Shim (The University of California-San Francisco), and Shawneequa Callier (The George Washington University) and funded by the Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI) Research Program in the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health. We are particularly interested in graduates and attorneys interested in engaging in innovative and interdisciplinary research at the intersections of genetics, ethics, law, and translational science. Scholars who are underrepresented in law and academic medicine and whose advocacy, legal work, or research centers the experiences of historically marginalized communities, including Black, Indigenous and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply.
Postdocs will design, organize and conduct specialized and advanced experiments using established scientific protocols, troubleshoot and design new protocols, summarize findings and publish results in research journals, under the general supervision of a faculty member. In some cases, postdocs will assume general responsibility for general scientific operations in the lab, and/or provide supervision and guidance to laboratory staff, trainees, and other researchers.
The incumbent will work directly with Associate Professor, Shawneequa Callier, at the George Washington University. Responsibilities include the following:
  • Conduct academic literature reviews relevant to the study
  • Search national and international legal databases for applicable case law and law review articles
  • Analyze contracts and other legal instruments
  • Research and analyze institutional policies related to community genomic research partnerships
  • Assist with manuscript preparation
  • Attend team meetings with a multi-institutional research team

A Postdoctoral Associate:
  • holds a PhD or equivalent degree;
  • develops skills by participating in scholarly projects that are actively mentored by a member of the university faculty;
  • receives financial support in the form of a salary that is typically funded by grants, contracts or departmental funds secured by a faculty mentor; and
  • has a limited term of up to five years at GW.

In collaboration with experienced researchers, this role will participate in the planning and conduction of discovery research, data analysis and interpretation, preparation of materials for publication, presentations at conferences and meetings, and may develop new theories and methodologies. This role can expect timely advice as to research directions and career planning for a future independent career.
Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Doctoral degree or comparable doctoral degree in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Recent law school graduate with experience researching, analyzing, and writing legal documents and law review articles.
  • Ability to use standard legal databases such as LexisNexis and Westlaw, and to format citations in the required Bluebook format.
  • J.D. degree is strongly preferred.
Typical Hiring Range Commensurate with Experience.
