The Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) supports the research infrastructure and facilitates several institutional research initiatives .
In the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, this role in bioinformatics research and development will involve the following:
Postdocs will design, organize and conduct specialized and advanced experiments using established scientific protocols, troubleshoot and design new protocols, summarize findings and publish results in research journals, under the general supervision of a faculty member. In some cases, postdocs will assume general responsibility for scientific operations in the lab, have opportunity to give lectures, and/or provide supervision and guidance to laboratory staff, trainees, and other researchers.
Examples of duties might include:
- Design and implement bioinformatics research protocols; design, implement and test workflows; adapt new procedures, methods, or instrumentation relative to research procedures.
- Collect, prepare, and analyze research data; keep detailed notes in GitHub, SharePoint or something similar summarizing experiments and recording research data; tabulate and display data for presentation in research conferences and for manuscript preparation; use graphics and statistical software to analyze and present data; search pertinent scientific literature as needed. – Provide feedback related to hardware purchase and maintenance; assist with ordering and procurement and with general maintenance of laboratory.
- Development of databases, software tools and web resources, and clear communication with stakeholders.
- Research project coordination and supervise other personnel in the laboratory; participate in training of fellows, residents, students and volunteer workers as needed.
- Leading testing, development, and maintenance of portals, software, tools, and workflows produced in the lab.
- Use of SharePoint, GitHub, Slack and similar tools for communication and project management.
- Coordinating meetings and assisting in the drafting of research project reports, proposals, publications, and presentation content.
- Scheduling of tasks and follow-up meetings regarding progress with the stakeholders.
- Helping with miscellaneous departmental duties and expectations.
A Postdoctoral Associate:
- holds a PhD or equivalent degree;
- has a deep understanding of bioinformatics tools, biology and biological databases possesses a high level of experience in programming (Python, MongoDB, C++, HTML/CSS/JavaScript, R, Linux, AWS);
- is familiar with machine learning;
- is familiar with various database structures, BioCompute Objects, biomarkers, glycans, genes, proteins and other biomolecules;
- is able to write scientifically backed reports appropriate to be used by sponsors and collaborators;
- is familiar with SharePoint, GitHub, Slack and/or similar tools;
- develops skills by participating in scholarly projects that are actively mentored by a member of the university faculty;
- has opportunities to teach, help write or write and submit proposals to government and other agencies
- receives financial support in the form of a salary that is typically funded by grants, contracts or departmental funds secured by a faculty mentor; and has a limited term of up to five years at GW.
In collaboration with experienced researchers, this role will participate in the planning and conduction of discovery research, data analysis and interpretation, preparation of materials for publication, presentations at conferences and meetings, and may develop new theories and methodologies. This role can expect timely advice as to research directions and career planning for a future independent career.
Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Doctoral degree or comparable doctoral degree in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.
