Postdoctoral Associate

Position Description
A postdoctoral associate is needed to assist an NIH funded research project investigating impacts of brominated flame retardant exposure on placental thyroid hormone regulation. The candidate will be expected to work in a team setting with other research staff and PhD students supporting the Project HOPE 1000 pregnancy cohort. The candidate will be expected to conduct independent research and experiments that involve in vitro thyroid enzymatic activity assays, liquid chromatography mass spectrometry analyses, and nontargeted analyses of tissue samples using gas chromatography orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry. Other duties will depend on the Scholar’s prior experience but may include sample analyses, data analysis, or supervising and mentoring students.

Work Performed: The primary duties of this position include: • Perform targeted and nontargeted analyses of semi-volatile organic compounds in placenta tissue using gas chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry (45%) • Support statistical analyses of large data sets from an epidemiological cohort, investigating associations with birth outcomes using both targeted and nontargeted data (25%) • Support manuscript development and reporting of research results for the project (20% • Support mentoring of graduate students in the laboratory (10%)

Term: This is a full time position available immediately with a preferred start date before September 15th, 2026 and available through March 31, 2027.

Required Qualifications at this Level: Education/Training: a PhD in environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental health, or a related field. Skills & Experience: • Experience with exposure assessments, particularly for semi-volatile organic compounds • Experience with operating laboratory analytical instruments, and notably LC-MS/MS and GC-HRMS • Research experience in sample collection and analysis for organic contaminants or biomarkers of exposure using mass spectrometry techniques • Experience with epidemiologic study design and implementations, particularly working with study participants • Data management experience and statistical expertise, particularly related to environmental mixtures
