The Evans lab in the Cell Biology Department at Duke University seeks a highly motivated and talented full-time postdoctoral associate to join our team. The Evans lab studies mitochondrial quality control pathways in neurons using primary cell culture, transgenic mice, and advanced microscopy techniques. We focus on basic cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate neuronal mitochondria to understand how dysregulation contributes to neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s disease and ALS. Principle responsibilities :

• Successfully design and perform experiments and collect and analyze data related to the research project(s) in the Evans lab.
• Read and maintain an understanding of primary literature relevant to the research project(s) in the Evans lab.
• Keep appropriate experimental and data records in an organized and reproducible manner, as outlined in standard operating procedures for the Evans lab and Duke University.
• Demonstrate intellectual leadership and a commitment to the primary and secondary research project(s) in the Evans lab.
• Present data in an organized, logical manner during lab meetings, departmental seminars, and conferences.
• Express a commitment to activities that enhance training and career development, including writing fellowship applications.
• Demonstrate significant intellectual contribution to the scientific projects within the lab.
• Contribute to the training and advancement of graduate trainees and other lab personnel.

Preferred qualifications:

• Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., ScD, MD, DVM) in biological sciences (Cell Biology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, or a related field).
• Evidence of successful completion of a research project in the form of publications (preprints are included).
• Ability to work independently; interpret, present, and discuss experimental data.
• Excellent communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, and organizational skills.

This will be a minimum one-year appointment, contingent upon satisfactory annual reviews. Salary is commensurate with NIH guidelines and applicant experience. The candidate must be eligible for a postdoctoral fellow position and register with the Office of Postdoctoral Services per the following requirements:

• The term of this appointment is limited: 5 years with a possible extension for an additional year.
• The appointment involves substantially full-time research or scholarship, which may include teaching responsibilities.
• The appointment is considered preparatory for a full-time academic or research career.
• The appointment is not part of a clinical research training program unless research training under the supervision of a senior mentor is the primary purpose of the appointment.
• The appointee works under the supervision of a scholar or a department at Duke University.
• The appointee has the freedom and is expected to publish the results of their research or scholarship during the appointment period.

Expectations:

• The conscientious discharge of research or scholarship responsibilities, which may include teaching responsibilities for Postdoctoral Associates.
• Conformance to standards of responsible conduct in research.
• Compliance with good scholarly and research practice.
• Maintenance of a laboratory notebook and/or other comparable records of research activity, which remains the property of Duke University upon termination.
• Adherence to University standards regarding the use of isotopes, chemicals, infectious agents, animals, human subjects, and the like.
• Open and timely discussion with the mentor regarding all facets of the Postdoctoral Appointee's research activities. • Prompt disclosure to the mentor regarding the possession and desire to distribute materials, reagents, software, copyrightable and potentially patentable discoveries derived from the Postdoctoral Appointee's research.
