Postdoctoral Fellowship in Malaria and Implementation Research

The Duke Global Health Institute announces a postdoctoral fellowship, to start as early as Sept 1, 2022, for a minimum of one year, and renewable for an additional 2 years contingent upon performance and funding availability.  The fellowship will focus on implementation science to address the problem of presumptive treatment of fevers with antimalarials.

This position is under the direct supervision of faculty member Wendy Prudhomme O’Meara, PhD, and will support a skilled scientist interested in developing a career in malaria and vector-borne disease, health services, and implementation science research. The postdoctoral fellow will be a member of the Duke Global Health Institute and also participate fully on the NIH-funded project entitled “A randomized experiment of malaria diagnostic testing and conditional subsidies to target ACTs in the retail sector: the TESTsmART trial”. The TESTsmART project seeks to work with the retail sector to improve access to diagnostic testing for malaria and rational antimalarial use. The fellow will have access to existing datasets and participate in prospective study design and data collection with the possibility to incorporate new ideas into upcoming surveys and patient encounters.

The TESTsmART project and the PI are based in Eldoret, Kenya, one of Duke Global Health Institute’s priority partnership locations. The fellow will be based in Eldoret with regular travel to associated field sites, including Lagos, Nigeria, and occasional travel to the United States. The fellow will have the opportunity to establish professional relationships with Moi University colleagues, collaborators from Clinton Health Access Initiative, and government policy-makers. S/he will also have access to quantitative resources and mentorship within the DGHI Research Design and Analysis Core. They will also be part of the vibrant community of post-doctoral scholars working with DGHI. Responsibilities of the position include project oversight, mentorship of team members and students, study design and planning, data analysis, manuscript writing and grant preparation. The fellow will work as part of a team of 15 other staff including data managers, study coordinators, site supervisors, and research assistants. The fellow will be expected to gradually take on leadership and management responsibilities within the team. The successful candidate will also help the team to branch out into new strategic areas of research.

Individuals who have completed a PhD or DrPH in applied statistics, epidemiology, public health, or a related field are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have strong writing, presentation, and communication skills, good project management and leadership abilities, and excellent analytical reasoning and quantitative skills.

Ideal applicants will be interested in the intersection of rigorous quantitative methods and real-world application to policy. Applicants with experience or interest in malaria are especially encouraged to apply. Experience working abroad in resource-limited settings is desirable.

The position comes with a full-time salary, benefits, and funding for travel support to one international conference per year.
