Occupational Summary

The Miao laboratory at Duke University is advertising for a highly qualified and motivated Postdoctoral fellow. The Miao laboratory uses both in vivo and in vitro models to study host-pathogen interactions, with a particular focus on innate immunity and regulated cell death. We are seeking a dedicated and responsible individual who can multitask, pay attention to details, and complete assignments in a timely way. We require a PhD degree or equivalent for this position. Preference will be given to candidates with skills and experience directly relevant to our research, such as mouse models and histology.

Work Performed

Conduct various investigations in designing, developing, and implementing experimental procedures and specialized laboratory techniques to analyze in vitro and in vivo mouse models of infectious diseases where granulomas form in response to infection.

Gather data and information by means of observation, experimentation, and other techniques, such as handling and operating advanced laboratory equipment and instruments.

Work under the supervision of Dr. Miao in the lab to perform experiments including handling live mice for assessment of their immune response to pathogens after infection via various delivery methods, sacrificing mice, and processing organs and tissues for analysis. The position involves working in BSL-2 conditions for conducting immunology research using molecular biology, bacteriology, and tissue culture. Techniques to be used may include fluorescent microscopy from tissue samples, flow cytometry, cloning DNA constructs, ELISA, and other methods.

Oversee projects and communicate findings to the principal investigator. Collaborate with the principal investigator to identify experiments to be incorporated into the research plan and discuss the interpretation of results. Support the execution of progressively intricate and multi-day experiments. Analyze and interpret gathered data and generate reports of experimental findings to draw valid conclusions.

Stay up to date with new developments in the field by reviewing scientific literature, including journals and abstracts. Use this information to help design and develop new procedures and techniques.

Prepare manuscripts that describe the experimental findings and conclusions for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Required Qualifications at this Level


Education/Training:

Work requires an PhD degree in biological science or related scientific field.


Experience:

Experience in mouse models of infection and histology and tissue staining.


Skills:

Immunohistochemistry, microscopy, mouse handling and infection.
