Postdoctoral Associate- Alloy and Ceramic Materials Science
Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in Materials Science or a closely related discipline in hand by the start of the appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in Materials Science with experience in electron microscopy characterization of materials, synchrotron x-ray characterization of materials, spectroscopy techniques and thermophysical property measurements.
Brief Description of Duties:
The postdoctoral positions will focus on a range of fundamental research activities related to alloy and ceramic materials development for extreme applications using advanced experimental techniques involving processing, characterization, and testing of coupon level samples with the goal of enhancing performance for target applications involving combinations of high temperatures, stresses, and radiation (broadly classified as extreme environments). Specific scientific duties and responsibilities include:
● Processing of advanced metal alloys, ceramics, and metal/ceramic matrix composites using powder based techniques including but not limited to high energy ball milling, spark plasma, hot isostatic pressing, and various additive manufacturing techniques as well as post processing for tuning microstructure through heat treatment and thermomechanical processing.
● Detailed microstructural examination of candidate materials using scanning, transmission, and scanning transmission electron microscopy, benchtop x-ray diffraction, synchrotron x-ray scattering, and advanced spectroscopy techniques.
● Thermal stability and thermophysical property measurements including sample preparation and experimental campaigns combining ex situ furnace aging, differential scanning calorimetry/differential thermal analysis, laser flash analysis, and dilatometry.
● Fundamental understanding of materials science principals underlying processing and interpretation of data and effective communication in scientific literature.
● Writing and management of laboratory user proposals.
● Other duties as assigned.
