The Materials Science Division (MSD) of Argonne National Laboratory is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral associate in the area of surface chemistry and materials science.
The research projects aim at new materials platforms synthesized through vapor phase reactions, advanced characterization of inorganic few-atom clusters and porous conductive scaffolds, and investigation of (photo)electrochemical phenomena. The appointees will advance the basic science of sequential infiltration synthesis (related to atomic layer deposition), isoporous conductive membranes, and in situ and ex situ chemical and materials characterization. The successful candidate will perform basic science studies to understand and control the mechanisms of sequential infiltration synthesis, advanced characterization of atomic layer deposition processes, and control of the optoelectronic properties of thin films. Experimental work involves precision atomic layer deposition synthesis through understanding of structural, chemical, optical, and electrical characterization of growth.
Position Requirements
A strong experimental and theoretical background in (photo)electrochemistry, chemical vapor deposition methods, spectroscopic ellipsometry, high vacuum systems, and electron microscopy
Experience in atomic layer deposition (ALD) and/or sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) and related synthesis methods in the area of transition metal oxides, sulfides, and alloys is preferred
Familiarity with synchrotron X-ray experiments including total X-ray scattering and EXAFS is also preferred.
Note: Condensed matter physics, organic or bio-related areas are not in consideration for this position.
Must have demonstrated outstanding promise as a research scientist
Strong applicants will exhibit strong basic science understanding, motivation, and an ability to originate, carry out, and publish significant original research
Strong written and verbal skills are required. Previous experience with atomic layer deposition, electrochemistry, and electrical and physical characterization are desirable but not required
Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field received within the last three years is required
The candidate is expected to creatively problem solve, work independently, and conduct research in a highly interdisciplinary environment of chemists, physicists, and materials scientists
