Position Summary | Supervised by Dean Ramona Denby, the School of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking an emerging scholar for a postdoctoral position to work with a team of faculty and students on research projects related to child welfare practice (e.g., kinship care, culturally-specific delivery of child welfare services, youth transitioning from the child welfare system, foster youth who are pregnant and/or parenting, increasing the well-being of youth and caregivers, intersection of children’s mental health and child welfare system involvement, and macro analysis and reform of child welfare systems). This postdoctoral scholar will support Dean Denby and her team in conducting literature reviews; conducting qualitative and quantitative data collection; developing grant applications; developing study designs, study protocols and IRB applications; qualitative and quantitative data management and analysis; and research and scholarly dissemination in scholarly as well as practitioner- and policy-based venues. This position will work collaboratively with a Ph.D.-level Senior Research Associate and supervise/mentor research assistants. The position will work to build local community partnerships while simultaneously managing Dean Denby’s national research collaboratives. This position will primarily focus on projects related to evaluating services for kinship caregivers, developing interventions that promote protective factors and increase the psychosocial, economic, and emotional well-being of kinship families, and translation of research discoveries related to tailoring child welfare support and interventions to the needs of children of color. While working with Dean Denby and her team, the emerging scholar will also have opportunities to develop capacities, expertise, and skills for independent research. Principal Functions: 20% Data Analysis 10% Evaluation protocol and intervention development 50% Manuscript development 20% Proposal development Initial appointment is 12 months with the potential for an additional 24-month renewal for a total of 36 months. Deadline for applications is December 31, 2021 for best consideration, but applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, starting immediately until the position is filled. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | PhD (or near completion) in Social Work (preferred) or a PhD in a related field (e.g., family studies, public health, psychology, sociology, education, counseling, economics). MSW (preferred) or a masters in a related field (e.g., family studies, nursing, public health, psychology, sociology). |

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Candidates should have early-career scholarly and research experience and interests in the areas of child welfare practice (e.g., kinship care, culturally-specific delivery of child welfare services, youth transitioning from the child welfare system, foster youth who are pregnant and/or parenting, increasing the well-being of youth and caregivers, intersection of children’s mental health and child welfare system involvement, and macro analysis and reform of child welfare systems). Highly competitive candidates will have experience with community-based and engaged scholarship; developing applications for IRB board reviews; intervention and prevention intervention development and research; qualitative and quantitative data collection, data management, and data analysis; and/or research and scholarly dissemination (e.g., briefs, conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications, reports, white papers). Grant writing is a desired strength and there is an opportunity for the post-doctoral scholar to be trained and supported to increase grant writing skills. Highly competitive candidates will also have professional practice experience in human, social, and/or social work services. |
