To support research work in the area of foodborne pathogen genomics and gastrointestinal health of poultry (broilers and turkey). The work for this position will be a combination of microbial genomics and population-based analysis of whole-genome sequencing data, gut microbiome data modeling, along with standard microbiological work (growing pathogens such as Salmonella and Campylobacter), and working on infectious models in poultry. The laboratory work will entail DNA isolation from fecal samples, culture of pathogens, qPCR, and antibiotic profiling of pathogens. The animal work will be centered on poultry infectious models with Campylobacter and Salmonella, along with nutritional trials to identify novel ways to modulate the gut microbiome of poultry. The data mining part of the position will include whole-genome sequencing analysis using platforms like Prokevo, biostatistics with R, and 16S rRNA data mining with mothur/Qiime2. 


Additional Information:

40% Conduct laboratory and animal research and perform critical analysis of experimental data.

50% Assist in the preparation of research papers, data mining of publicly available datasets, manuscripts, posters and presentations for scientific meetings.

10% Maintain laboratory operations and help train graduate and undergraduate students and coordinate research activities in the laboratory and animal buildings.
