JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

A Postdoctoral position available in the laboratory of Mitchell Machtay, MD, Associate Director and Associate Dean for Clinical Oncology Research and Professor of Radiation Oncology at the Cancer Institute at the Penn State College of Medicine, in Hershey, PA.

Projects involve the study of radiation (and chemoradiation) resistance and modulation of resistance in malignant solid tumors. Emphasis is on squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN) and non-small cell lung carcinoma (squamous and adenocarcinoma), but the successful candidate is encouraged to propose their own models and experiments as well.

The principal models will include archival human tumor tissue samples (correlation of biomarkers including genomic analyses with clinical outcomes), human and mouse cancer cell lines (in vitro studies), and small animal in vivo models of radiation with and without drug therapies. The latter will include orthotopic and xenograft models, including both immunocompromised and immunocompetent animals. Radiation technology will include orthovoltage, isotope (e.g. Cesium, Cobalt), and megavoltage generators.  We anticipate obtaining a high-resolution, highly-conformal small animal irradiator (SARRP) capable of mimicking human radiation therapy techniques.

Candidates should be highly motivated, have a PhD, a strong background in molecular and cell biology, and experience with mouse models of oncology.  This includes ability to perform cell cultures, western blots, gel electrophoresis, PCR and other basic techniques, as well the ability to inject materials (tumor cells and/or drug compounds) into mice, subcutaneously, intraperitoneally and tail-vein injection.  Prior specific experience with radiation biology and the use of irradiators is   desirable but not mandatory. Prior experience with immunology/syngeneic mouse models is also desirable. The candidate should be capable of designing and analyzing experiments (including basic biostatistics) consistent with the broad thematic goals of the research program. The candidate must qualify for the ability to use radiation producing devices and work with radioactive materials, upon approval by the Radiation Safety Office. He/she should have quality publications in peer review journals, preferably in topics related to oncology.  They need to be fluent in English, and interested and motivated to contribute to grant-writing and supervision of research associates and/or students as the laboratory expands.

This is a limited-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire.

Employment will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University polices.
