Position Description


Advertised Job Summary
This postdoctoral researcher will carry out research in marine microbial ecology and biochemistry. Tasks include but are not limited to microbial cultivation, bioinformatic analysis, writing manuscripts, and training graduate students.
Minimum Qualifications
The position requires a PhD in Earth or Ocean Sciences or a closely related field with expertise in microbiology, molecular biology, or quantitative/computational biology, microbial cultivation skills, knowledge of python and bioinformatics tools, potential for or evidence of strong publication record, excellent verbal and written communication skills. This expertise could have been gained during the normal course of a doctoral degree program.
Preferred Qualifications
Expertise in microbiology, stable isotope biogeochemistry, molecular biology, or quantitative/computational biology, microbial cultivation skills, knowledge of python and bioinformatics tools, potential for or evidence of strong publication record, excellent verbal and written communication skills. Job Duties


Job Duty
Field and laboratory experimental work. Will travel to the field, such as the North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, to collect seawater and sediment samples. Will use collected samples for DNA and RNA extraction in the laboratory, as well as microbial cultivation. Some samples will be used for incubation experiments. The physiology of marine microorganisms will be characterized in the lab by cultivation under different conditions. Perform 15N incubations to determine the contribution of salt marsh sediment fungi to nitrous oxide production. WORKSITES:

Data analysis and drafting manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals. Will use bioinformatics software to analyze genomic and transcriptomic data generated from field and lab experiments. Proficiency in R, Matlab, and/or Python is required for data analysis and figure generation. Will provide scientific findings which will be summarized in manuscripts submitted for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
