Description:

Overview

Cures Start Here. At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home to three Nobel laureates, interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists seek new and innovative ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Fred Hutch’s pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation led to the development of immunotherapy, which harnesses the power of the immune system to treat cancer. An independent, nonprofit research institute based in Seattle, Fred Hutch houses the nation’s first cancer prevention research program, as well as the clinical coordinating center of the Women’s Health Initiative and the international headquarters of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. Careers Start Here.

At Fred Hutch, we believe that the innovation, collaboration, and rigor that result from diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission of eliminating cancer and related diseases. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems. Fred Hutch is in pursuit of becoming an antiracist organization. We are committed to ensuring that all candidates hired share our commitment to diversity, antiracism, and inclusion.

Responsibilities

This postdoctoral research position at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is in genetic epidemiology working directly with Dr. Burcu Darst. Fred Hutch provides a challenging academic and supportive multi-disciplinary research environment. The successful applicant will have a background in genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, public health genetics, biostatistics, bioinformatics, or related fields. Please note that this is NOT a laboratory-based position. This position will be principally funded by the NIH-funded T32 Training Program “Developing Data Driven Cancer Researchers ”.

We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow who will engage in genetic investigations, including studies of polygenic risk scores, integrating genetic and metabolomic data to better understand and model disease risk, sequencing studies of rare genetic variants, and understanding genetic contributions to health disparities. The primary focus of our group is prostate cancer, which is a leading cause of cancer death worldwide, represents one of the largest health disparities in the US, and has a strong genetic component. We also conduct research in type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. Our group has a particularly strong focus performing research in ancestrally diverse populations to ensure that our findings will lead to equitable advances in healthcare, particularly for populations with the highest disease burden. The postdoctoral fellow will have numerous opportunities to publish first author papers and present at national meetings.
