Job Summary
The Mapping Racism and Resistance project at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) invites applications for a 12-month Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Geospatial Analysis and the Digital Humanities. Mapping Racism and Resistance is a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)- funded, digital humanities and crowdsourcing project documenting racially restrictive covenants and Black resistance to them in the early part of the 20th Century in Milwaukee County. The project has mobilized thousands of volunteers to map racial covenants, which are legal clauses in property records preventing people who were not white from occupying land. Volunteers read historical property records in search of racial covenants, generating data that can be mapped.
We seek a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Geospatial Analysis and the Digital Humanities to make maps, curate datasets, and integrate data on racial covenants with archival research and other geospatial data. The Post-Doc will be based in the Department of Geography, but will work closely with the project team, including the Project Leads (Dr. Anne Bonds and Dr. Derek G. Handley) and staff at UWM Libraries , particularly in the American Geographical Society Library and in Digital Collections and Initiatives , to:
· Create and design both web and static maps that integrate racial covenants datasets with other data (e.g. historic racial demographics, freeways, protest sites)
· Conflate historical archival material and qualitative data such as interviews and oral histories into mappable datasets
· Convert historical archival material into mappable datasets
· Integrate qualitative data, such as interviews and oral histories, with spatial data
· Manage and maintain a time-enabled web map of the racial covenants for use on the web page.
Minimum Qualifications
· PhD in Geography, Urban Planning, Urban Studies, Data Science, or other related fields
· Demonstrated expertise in spatial analysis, geographic statistics, and GIS and/or statistics software for spatial analysis (e.g. ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, R, Python, SPSS, GeoDa)
Preferred Qualifications
· Demonstrated interest and experience in Black Geographies
· Familiarity with the Digital Humanities
· Experience with qualitative GIS and/or narrative cartography
· Experience with web mapping and cartographic web development
Target Salary Range 60,000
