Post-Doctoral Research Associate - Materials Science and Engineering

Regular, Full-time, Pay Grade 00


The University of Tennessee is pleased to announce an immediate opening for a postdoctoral associate position focused on alloy design and advanced processing of Rare Earth Element (REE) alloys for structural applications. The research includes the processing science of advanced manufacturing methods such as consolidation of nanostructured alloy powders, additive manufacturing, and thermo-mechanical processing.

 


This position resides at the Institute for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing at the University of Tennessee (IAMM-UT), in Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and will be co-supervised by Profs. Eric Lass and Orlando Rios. The successful candidate will have a significant role in designing industry scale research programs to effectively transition science and IP to pilot scale manufacturing with the support of a diverse research team along with a leading role in basic science understanding of processing to structure and properties.

 


The program includes multiple national laboratories and industrial partners within aerospace, defense, nuclear and transportation. The research group at UT will lead the characterization of materials produced by the UT laboratories, national laboratories and industry partners. Characterization techniques include SEM, TEM, XRD and total scattering (PDF). The research program includes advanced characterization using neutron sources and high energy x-ray sources.

 


The position will allow the postdoctoral scientist to develop expertise and broaden experience by through close collaboration with a diverse set of scientists at UT, Ames, ORNL, LLNL, INL, and industry. 
 



Qualifications

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • The applicant must have a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or a related field, or will complete degree requirements by May 31, 2022.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience in one of more of the following: materials processing, microstructural characterization and/or mechanical properties evaluation with expertise/interest in neutron and synchrotron methods for advanced structural characterization.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a demonstrated track record in publishing, are required.
