Post-Doctoral Research Associate - Department of Microbiology


Pay Rate: $4,570/month ($54,840/year)
General Description:
The person in this position will be 1) performing purification of the membrane bound Candida albicans enzyme fungal phosphatidylserine (PS) synthase (Cho1) and subsequent enzymatic assays with radiolabled or colorimetric substrates.  2) Analysis of the impact of small molecules on enzyme activity as potential inhibitors 3) Saturation binding assays with radiolableled substates 4) analysis of cellular phenotypes by microscopy and thin-layer chromatography of lipids 5) analysis of predicted protein structures via Molecular Operating Environment and Alpha-Fold and structure-function studies involving mutagenesis of plasmid born copies of the CHO1 gene.

 

Earliest starting date is January 1st , 2024. The initial appointment will be for up to 6 months with the possibility of extension for up to one year based on performance and availability of funding.

 



Qualifications

 

Responsibilities / Duties:


The candidate will be responsible for

1)    Design and perform experiments to purify and run assays on Candida albicans PS synthase.

2)    Study the impact of small molecules on PS synthase activity and binding of small molecules to the protein.

3)    Perform analysis of structure function relationships of the enzyme to potential inhibitors, and with chemists to improve the small molecules.

4)    Write papers on the performed research, submit these papers for publication, and present this research at meetings.

Requirements:

 

1)    PhD (or equivalent) in microbiology, biochemistry, or related field.

2)    Previous documented experience in protein biochemistry.

3)    Solid skills in genetic engineering and cell biology.

4)    Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

      Knowledge of the protein structure software

      Knowledge of fungal genetics.

      Knowledge of protein biochemistry.
