Description of Work
Position Overview
We are seeking two post-doctoral researchers to join the Community and Regional Planning program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, starting on either January 1, 2024, or July 1, 2024, for a duration of 1.5 years. The primary focus of these roles is on disaster risk management and hazard mitigation planning. The key research task involves quantifying the impact of private levees on damage resulting from the 2019 disasters and assessing potential impacts in future disaster scenarios. Responsibilities include developing and implementing a methodology to measure a community’s heightened risk due to the failure of levee-like structures, gathering available data, and applying risk assessment techniques to determine community vulnerabilities in flood scenarios.
The ultimate goal is to enhance overall community resilience, leading to the construction of more disaster-resistant buildings in Nebraska. Post-doctoral researchers will collaborate with diverse stakeholders, contribute to flood risk mitigation research, and produce peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts. Publication goals will be established collaboratively, focusing on specific areas of interest. Postdoctoral researchers will have access to external professional development opportunities and internal training sessions covering data analysis techniques, manuscript preparation, and grant writing. The role also provides practical skills in community outreach, interdisciplinary collaborations, and opportunities to present research findings at scientific conferences. Postdoctoral researchers may also engage in classroom teaching and explore educational career development. Additionally, they may assist with tasks such as data management, statistical and methodological needs, graduate student advising, educational training, grant proposal preparation, and the creation of annual progress reports.
Key Research Responsibilities
  • Quantify the impacts of private levees on damage from past and potential future disasters.
  • Develop and apply a methodology for measuring community risk associated with the failure of levee-like structures.
  • Collect and analyze available data to assess community vulnerability in flood scenarios.
  • Develop an outreach plan for risk communication and consultation on alternative mitigation activities.
  • Develop risk awareness and housing resiliency plans at both local and regional scales.
  • Evaluate planning integration efforts at different scales.
  • Promote sound, sustainable long-term mitigation planning informed by a post-disaster evaluation of hazard risk, especially land-use decisions.
