Job Description Summary:
Department of Cancer Biology, KUMC is seeking a highly motivated candidate to work in the laboratory of Dr. Ben Woolbright as a postdoctoral trainee in the field of Cancer Biology. The Woolbright lab investigates how interactions between the microbiome and inflammation affect bladder cancer development, progression and response to therapy. In association with core facilities and our collaborators, the project heavily utilizes murine models, molecular sequencing and various molecular biology techniques to define interactions and evaluate mechanisms. The successful candidate is expected to perform research by contributing to the design of experiments, data acquisition, data analysis and interpretation, manuscript preparation, and mentor junior researchers. The ideal candidate would readily collaborate and contribute scientifically to the mission of the lab.
Job Description:

Required Qualifications

Education: PhD in biochemistry, pharmacology, immunology or other appropriate biological science

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

  • Prior work in murine models

  • Basic understand of cancer biology

  • Immunology and microbiology experience highly preferred

  • Demonstration of capabilities through first author papers

Skills:

  • Excellent organizational skills and time management skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as a team.

  • Track record of first authored publications

  • Demonstrated research experience and familiarity with standard molecular biology techniques.

Job Duties Outlined:

  • Research Overview: Work with PI/faculty mentor, to design and perform experiments exploring how changes in aging and inflammation affect bladder cancer. Particular emphasis is on incorporation of how underlying changes in the microbiome can altar these factors.

    • Interpretation of experimental results and analysis of data, to use in publications, grants and determining next steps in the needed for the research.

    • Perform experiments requiring the flexibility and adaptability to execute a wide range of skills to perform a variety of bench experiments and utilize the labs equipment. This includes but not limited to working with human tissue, murine models and basic skills in molecular biology.

  • Postdoctoral Fellow Expectations: The Postdoctoral fellow will be expected to complete research projects under the guidance of the faculty mentor, record and interpret the results of their experiments in an (electronic) laboratory notebook, prepare publication-quality manuscripts (including figures and tables) and publish in peer-reviewed literature.

    • Read literature articles, develop new ideas, and assimilate the information into his/her project design/interpretation.

    • Dissemination of studies: Interact on a regular basis with their faculty mentor and members of the laboratory to discuss experimental design and interpretation of results.

    • Present research aims and findings at department seminars and at scientific meetings. Write and publish their results as first author in abstracts, manuscripts, and posters.

    • Submit fellowship applications, as eligible, to bolster research funding and CV building for projects.

    • Interact with KU Cancer Center donors and local cancer affiliates.

  • Compliance: Attend and maintain compliance on all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and the Cancer Biology Department, understand and follow IACUC and biosafety protocols, and attend departmental seminars and regular lab meetings.

  • Perform other duties assigned by PI and faculty mentor.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
