Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (https://chem.uncg.edu/) features an extremely supportive and collegial environment with 15 full-time faculty and a diverse student body. We offer a BS in Biochemistry, a BA, BS, and MS in Chemistry including biochemistry options, and a PhD in Chemistry and Biochemistry. Our department is housed in a 170,000 square foot, $35 million state of the art science building. Excellent core instrumentation and state of the art facilities for NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and mass spectrometry with full time support staff are available on site.
Position Summary
The Hematian Research Group in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of North Carolina Greensboro is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral scholar position to study bioinorganic chemistry of metalloenzymes. The project will focus on copper enzymes and
will involve enzymatic function, substrate specificity, and detailed mechanistic studies. Applicants with a strong background in bioinorganic chemistry, air-free manipulations, dioxygen chemistry, standard characterization techniques and spectroscopies are encouraged to apply. Most importantly we are looking for someone with enthusiasm for science and research, so applications from exceptional individuals who have a different scientific focus within fields related to different aspects of inorganic chemistry or biochemistry/chemical biology are more than welcome.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Conduct original research in the area of bioinorganic chemistry. Design and carry out experiments leading to the expression, purification, and mechanistic study of the relevant metalloenzymes.
  • Prepare and present updates on ongoing research, provide written reports on research progress, participate in group meetings and present seminars to scientific community when asked.
  • Contribute to the preparation and submission of reports, proposals and publications related to research.
  • Assist with supervision of graduate and undergraduate students with their research projects.
  • Provide leadership and training to students/researchers on proper procedures for all instruments, their maintenance and safety regulations in the laboratory setting.
  • Maintain an up-to-date file of current literature, referencing pertinent to the ongoing research project.

Candidates will have the opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary environment and have close interactions with other team members with diverse backgrounds in a variety of areas including bioinorganic chemistry, chemical biology, biophysics, catalysis, materials chemistry, photochemistry
and electrochemistry to broaden their skills.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in chemistry, biophysics, biochemistry or a related discipline. Other required qualifications include strong research background, excellent written communication skills as demonstrated in application materials and publications, the desire to mentor junior researchers and professionally interact with a multidisciplinary team and at least 1 year of experience.
