Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The UNC Greensboro, Department of Biology endeavors towards excellence in conducting research and teaching biological concepts and skills to biology majors and graduate students, to prepare them for professional careers and more advanced study. We introduce non-biology majors to the foundations and applications of biology. By involving undergraduate and graduate students in research, we contribute to and increase society’s knowledge across the broad spectrum of biology. We train doctoral students in Environmental Health Science, a complex and rapidly changing discipline. Through laboratory training and directed research experiences we enhance our students’ technical and analytical skills so that they can contribute meaningfully to an increasingly technological world. Our leadership in scientific innovation and discovery serves our students, profession, and our local and global communities.
Position Summary
The UNC Greensboro, Department of Biology seeks a Post Doctoral Fellow, researcher in zoology, biological anthropology, or other life or engineering sciences with broad expertise and research experience in the use of micro-CT scanners (preferably Nikon) and 3D reconstruction software (e.g., Avizo/Amira, VG Studio Max, Dragonfly) to conduct collaborative research (50%), develop CT-based training and instructional materials for a broad user base (40%), and contribute to maintenance (10%) of a newly acquired, NSF-funded micro-CT scanner at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (JSNN) in Greensboro, NC.
The JSNN is a joint venture between the UNC Greensboro and North Carolina A&T University. The researcher will have the opportunity to expand their own CT-based research portfolio to include training and instruction and to deeply engage in undergraduate and graduate student mentoring with a high proportion of students and faculty from underrepresented minority groups in STEM.
Successful applicants will have ample access to a new Nikon XT H 225 micro-CT scanner for developing new and collaborative research questions, as well as the numerous other analytical and imaging instruments housed at JSNN which create substantial potential synergies for new research.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. in Life or Engineering Sciences, with 2-5 years of experience working with micro CT scanners and 3D imaging data.

  • Prior experience working with Nikon machines and CT visualization software such as VG Studio Max, Aviso/Amira, Dragonfly, and Mimics).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small as well as diverse advisory team.
