SEARCH seeks a postdoctoral fellow with expertise in a natural or social science and a dedication to addressing policy-relevant issues with the best available knowledge from science and other ways of knowing. That dedication should inspire confidence to work in a non-traditional, boundary spanning project. Under the supervision of the SEARCH principal investigator and in close collaboration with scientific, Indigenous, and policy-making colleagues, the fellow will synthesize existing knowledge across disciplines and knowledge systems and share the results in diverse formats to inform and drive policies and economic decisions.
The position is contingent on funding. SEARCH currently is funded by a grant to the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) from the National Science Foundation. Additional funding from the Department of Homeland Security is pending. The fellow will be based at the International Arctic Research Center, UAF while collaborating with Indigenous researchers in rural Alaska and Greenland, the Eskimo Walrus Commission, and the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium; scientific colleagues at UAF, Stantec Inc, the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, the National Center of Atmospheric Research, Terra Virens, ArcticNet (Canada), and the University of Michigan; as well as decision-making experts with the Wilson Center Polar Institute, the American Geophysical Union, the Science and Technology Policy Institute, the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, governmental agencies, the Pacific Northwest Economic Region (U.S. and Canada), and the Fram Centre (Norway).
To thrive in this position applicants should have demonstrated expertise relevant to understanding environmental change in the Arctic and the ability to place expertise in larger, societal contexts. Successful candidates will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, possess the ability to write effectively for diverse audiences and a demonstrated capacity and patience to work across disciplines and knowledge systems.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicant must hold a Ph.D. degree in a Natural or Social Science at the time of appointment. 5 years of progressive research experience in a field relevant to the research (e.g. natural or social science, journalism, communications), or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

This position is ideally located on the UAF campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. A flexible work schedule may be considered upon discussion and in accordance with UA regulations. This is a full-time, exempt position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits
