Job Description Summary:
Dr. Peter Niedbalski’s Lab in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine is seeking a Post-doctoral Research Fellow to implement MRI-based techniques for imaging pulmonary structure and function. This fellow will collaborate with a team of clinicians and scientists to develop and apply novel proton and hyperpolarized 129Xe-based MRI methods. Areas of focus in Dr. Niedbalski’s lab are the creation of novel MRI sequences for pulmonary imaging, the development of quantitative imaging markers that can be applied in the context of lung health and disease, and the application of pulmonary imaging to lung health, cystic fibrosis, scleroderma, pulmonary hypertension, and other diseases. Imaging research at KUMC takes place at the Hoglund Biomedical Imaging Center, which is a free-standing research building with a complete suite of MRI research equipment. Equipment available at the Hoglund Biomedical Imaging Center include a 3T human imaging MRI, a 9.4T animal imaging MRI, and a xenon gas polarizer. Funding has also been secured for the installation of an additional 3T MRI and a photon-counting CT scanner. The ideal candidate will have a background in the physical sciences (physics, engineering, chemistry or similar), familiarity with MRI, and scientific programming experience (C++, Python, Matlab).
Job Description:

Required Qualifications

Education: Master’s degree in the physical sciences (physics, chemistry, engineering or similar) or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience demonstrating progressive responsibility

Work Experience:

  • Familiarity with Magnetic Resonance (EPR, NMR, MRI).

  • Experience with image processing and analysis.

  • Scientific communication skills, including clear transmission of ideas through abstracts, manuscripts, and presentations as evidenced by application materials

  • Mathematical and statistical knowledge

Preferred Qualifications

Education: PhD degree with an emphasis in physical science.

Work Experience:

  • Experience in scientific computing using Matlab, python, and/or C++.

  • Experience with MRI in any or all of the following domains:

    • Pulse Programming

    • Image Acquisition

    • Quantitative Image Analysis

  • Experience working with hyperpolarized media (129Xe, 13C, or others)



Job Duties Outlined
  • Generate a testable hypothesis and design experiments to answer the hypothesis

  • Perform experiments, data collection and analysis with limited oversight

  • Keep an accurate laboratory notebook and data securely

  • Present updates and summaries related to research activities and projects utilizing Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel in research meetings and conferences

  • Adhere to research timelines and deadlines and contribute to funding mechanisms

  • Assist with activities as directed by Principal Investigator and Program Director.

  • Other duties to support research activities as assigned by Principal Investigator and Program Director.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
