Position Description
Center for Hellenic Studies, Washington D.C. In collaboration with the department of the Classics at Harvard, CHS is pleased to announce a one-year postdoctoral fellowship on the theme of “Classics pedagogy for access and diversity”, with the possibility of renewal for a second year. The position is open to applicants in any field of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies who received their Ph.D. degree no earlier than May 1st 2021. This is a combined research and teaching postdoctoral fellowship. A demonstrated strong commitment to teaching is crucial, as is the ability to capture the interest of a diverse student body. We particularly seek applicants who have shown a commitment to Greek and Latin pedagogy and to making the discipline of Classics accessible to students from under-represented backgrounds. Familiarity and critical engagement with scholarship on inclusive pedagogy, classical reception studies, academic writing, and professional development are highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate some familiarity with high school and college education in the U.S.
The appointment is expected to begin on June 1st, 2024. This position entails a commitment to serve as the academic program director for the “Scholars in Training” summer program in the department of the Classics at Harvard, which is now entering its fourth year. This role includes coordinating the program, leading educational workshops and reading groups, supporting instructors, and mentoring students. The program runs for seven weeks, from mid-June to the first week of August. The fellow will receive an additional stipend to cover accommodation and cost of living expenses in Cambridge, MA, for the duration of the summer program and will also have access to an office in the Classics department while directing the program. It may also be possible to teach ancient Greek or Latin for Harvard’s summer school, with an additional salary paid by the Harvard Summer School. Planning for the summer school will entail ca. 35 hours of administrative work between the months of November and May in coordination with the Department of the Classics at Harvard. In Fall and Spring, the fellow will be in residence at the CHS in Washington and will pursue their own research.
Fellowships include a salary, housing at the CHS, and subsidized health insurance. The starting salary will be $67,600 with additional support (up to $4,000) for professional travel and other research expenses. The CHS will also assist with the fellow’s travel expenses to and from Washington. The fellow will have full access to the resources of the Harvard library system for the duration of the fellowship.

Basic Qualifications
Applicants must have received the PhD or equivalent degree or show clear evidence of planned receipt of the degree by the beginning of employment.
Additional Qualifications
This postdoctoral fellowship is open to applicants in any field of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies who will have defended their doctoral degree by July 1, 2024, or who received their degree no earlier than May 1st 2021. Candidates must have advanced teaching competence in ancient Greek and Latin and teaching and / or research interests in Classical Reception Studies.
