Job Summary
The School of Architecture (SoA) within the University of Utah’s College of Architecture + Planning invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellow in thermal comfort, building energy efficiency, low-carbon building envelopes, control & optimization. This position will be full-time 1.0 FTE to begin on July 1, 2024 and run through June 30, 2026.
The SoA offers an accredited Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies (BSAS) and a Master of Science in Architectural Studies (MSAS). In the last several years, a new integrated curriculum has been developed with a sequence of immersive design studios with integrated courses (technology, research, theory, design communication, etc.), building up from bachelor to master to a capstone experience of a student-driven individual design project prepared and supported by architectural research. http://soa.cap.utah.edu.
The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate a background in architecture or architectural engineering and research at the intersection of thermal comfort, building energy efficiency, low-carbon building envelopes, control & optimization. The position also offers the successful candidate opportunity co-teach classes with the lead supervisor or independently teach elective or design courses. The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of Dr. Timothy O. Adekunle.
Candidates will be required to show commitment in promoting the core beliefs underpinning the University of Utah School of Architecture within the school, the college, the institution, and the design professions. The core beliefs are Design Excellence, Responsibility, Resiliency, Respect and Respond.
Candidates will be required to conduct quality research and produce scholarly work within an R1 university setting. Based on the expectations for this position, candidates will have an excellent research trajectory and must hold a PhD degree.
Responsibilities
  • Carry out research in thermal comfort, building energy efficiency, advanced building envelope designs, control and how these components are integrated into optimized techniques or systems.
  • Conduct simulations and laboratory and field experiments on thermal comfort, control, heat and mass transfer through building envelope materials, assemblies, and systems.
  • Improve, develop, and utilize appropriate numerical modeling tools for thermal components and systems.
  • Develop experimental setups, conduct experiments (field work or lab work), and analyze results.
  • Work together in multidisciplinary teams composed of researchers from various areas of expertise at University of Utah School of Architecture and other academic units (e.g., building science, design, material science, automation, and sensors and controls).
  • Relate and team up with researchers from universities, laboratories, and private industry.
  • Present research results to the research team, funders, industry, and academia in the form of invited talks, conference papers, and peer-reviewed journal papers with high impact factors.
  • Support in the development and preparation of proposals.
  • Deliver SoA’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values.
  • Teaching 2-3 courses per academic year

Minimum Qualifications
Preferences
  • A strong publication record is desired.
  • Knowledge of numerical calculation and statistical data analysis techniques is highly required.
  • Knowledge of life cycle assessments, smart building technology and monitoring, building science, energy savings performance contracts, heating and cooling technologies, building and mechanical systems and controls is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with partners, sponsors, and others and to prepare reports, research/grant proposals, publications, and journal articles are required.
  • Solid academic and research record in relevant heat transfer, thermodynamics, and mass transfer, emphasizing modeling and experimental research.
  • Knowledge of building envelope materials, construction, and energy efficiency in buildings.
  • Experience setting and conducting laboratory experiments.
  • Self-motivated and ability to work individually and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of Energy Plus, WUFI, COMSOL or other similar software is required.
  • Knowledge of programming in MATLAB, LabVIEW, Python, C++, or similar tools is desired.
  • Experience in field studies of thermal comfort and/or thermal comfort modeling.
