Post Doctoral Associate - UEIS

Interested in exploring a career in research librarianship? Join the Academic Engagement team at Carnegie Mellon University Libraries as we reimagine library services for the algorithmic age.

As Postdoctoral Associate in Computational and Information Science, you should be technically skilled, have a strong understanding of trends in the fields of research covered at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science and ideas about ways to support their research and learning needs. You’ll be passionate about being part of an open and collaborative research community, and committed to develop a research and teaching agenda on topics of computer science, machine learning, and/or data/algorithmic literacy. You will be expected to build relationships with faculty, staff and students in your liaison departments and will have opportunities to collaborate on research, teaching, and publication. This is a fixed term 2-year position with 25% of time dedicated to research and 75% to teaching, engagement, and collaboration with CMU’s School of Computer Science.

CMU’s School of Computer Science is widely recognized as one of the first and best computer science programs in the word. It is also ranked highly in specialty areas such as programming languages, artificial intelligence, systems and theory. It offers BS, MS and PhD degrees in various areas and hosts a wide range of Postdoctoral researchers.

Under the leadership of the Associate Dean for Academic Engagement, you will:

• Develop positive relationships with the departments and centers in your portfolio (including the Robotics Institute, the Department of Computer Science, Software and Societal Systems Department, and the Language Technologies Institute)
• Along with the academic engagement team, the Open Source Programs Office and the Data and Code Support teams, develop and assess rightsized services and programs for the departments and centers in your portfolio
• Assist in building the libraries’ electronic and open resources for the departments in your portfolio
• In collaboration with colleagues in Academic Engagement, design and teach lessons and workshops and design teaching and learning materials in your areas of expertise. Examples might include computational best practices for open and reproducible research;
• Assist in the support of research tools such as Open Science Framework, LabArchives, FigShare, Overleaf, Jupyter Notebook, R, Python, and GitHub;
• Contribute to international research communities via publication or presentation.

What We Require

• Ph.D. in an engineering, science, social science, or information science field with substantial computational component to your research;
• Strong interest in building partnerships and developing services and programs that resonate with the communities in your portfolio ;
• Passion for working collaboratively with librarians on research projects, service and program development and assessment, and instructional offerings.

What We Would Like You To Have

• Strong track record in academic research in a computational or information science discipline (relevant research experience in industry or government also considered);
• Proven record of teaching excellence in academic settings including hands-on training or training others in computational skills. Curiosity about refining teaching skills and curriculum development;
• Experience managing, analyzing, or working with complex research data;
• Understanding of computational reproducibility best practices;
• Understanding of tools used for reproducible research such as Git/GitHub, Jupyter Notebook, Binder, Docker, Open Science Framework;
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively interact with diverse groups including faculty, students, staff, and administrators;
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team;
• Excellent organizational, communication, and presentation skills;
• Dedication to professional development including personal research and scholarship and growth of skills;

What We Can offer

The annual salary range for this position is $70,000 - $75,000.
