The Department of Environment of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE) focuses on the interface between people and the environment with interdisciplinary programs in air quality, atmospheric processes, human exposure and health effects, and sustainable water resources, drawn from faculty expertise In the physical and life sciences engineering and policy. The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE) is an academic and research department located in the Gillings School of Global Public Health and has 24 faculty, 29 joint and adjunct faculty, 14 administrative staff members, and 7 research staff members. It has about 120 graduate students. The mission of the Gillings School of Global Public Health is to improve public health, promote individual well-being, and eliminate health disparities across North Carolina and around the world.
The University of North Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Education and Research Center (NC OSHERC) is a NIOSH-funded Education and Research Center, located at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. NC OSHERC Targeted Research Training (TRT) Program has an opening for a post-doctoral fellowship position for an individual interested in pursuing advanced research training in occupational health and safety, with a special focus on inhalation and skin exposures, biomarker discoveries and analyses, gene-environment interactions, computational toxicology, and pharmacokinetic/toxicokinetic modelling. This is a full-time position for a maximum of two years.
The post-doctoral candidate is expected to be familiar with conducting computational toxicology, pharmacokinetic/toxicodynamic/transport modelling, and gene-environment interaction studies. Prior training and experience in the use of R or Python are required. Experience in experimental human and/or animal studies as well as -omics (exposomics, metabolomics, and/or proteomics) is not required but would also be beneficial.
Training will be interdisciplinary and focused on the trainee’s specific needs, including mentored research experience under senior researchers in interdisciplinary research and participation in seminars. Duties include data collection and analysis, publishing in the peer-reviewed literature, participating in seminars and workgroups, and collaborating on research grant applications. Training may also include didactic coursework, depending on training goals and needs. Opportunities for teaching may also be available.
Post-doctoral fellow will have the opportunity to conduct occupational health and safety research in close collaboration with the NC OSHECR faculty at UNC-CH, Duke University, and North Carolina State University. This Fellowship also offers an opportunity to work with researchers, public health practitioners, and clinicians across disciplines, as well as to become involved with existing collaborations with community groups, non-profit organizations, employers, and professionals. This broad network provides a rich, dynamic environment for trainees and substantial opportunities for research.
The potential fellow must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident due to the restriction of the funding mechanism by NIOSH/CDC. A candidate who recently earned a PhD in exposure science/occupational health, analytical chemistry, bioinformatics, genetics or other related fields and is interested in cross-disciplinary training and research experience in exposure science, computational toxicology, genetics, gene-environment interactions, prevention and control of occupational exposures is encouraged to apply.
Candidates from underrepresented populations are strongly encouraged to apply for this position. Potential applicants are encouraged to view the NC OSHERC website (https://sph.unc.edu/osherc/osherc/) and contact Dr. Leena Nylander-French for further information.
The annual salary is set according to the experience of the candidate. The position is contingent upon funding.
