Essential Job Duties

A postdoctoral position is available for a USDA-AFRI funded project focused on developing novel methods for preventing food-borne disease by controlling Salmonella in poultry through a greater understanding of the intestinal microflora. The successful candidate will be expected to manage a multidisciplinary research project involving bacteriology, immunology, microbiome, bioingormatics and poultry biology.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Works with undergraduate and graduate students; team oriented; handle poultry and mice.

Minimum Experience/Education

Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) in appropriate field awarded no more than five (5) years from initial date of postdoctoral appointment.

Departmental Required Skills

Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) in microbiology, biochemistry, immunology, bioinformetics or related field.

Basic microbiology, biochemistry, immunology and writing skills.

Will need to be comfortable with handling Poultry and Mice.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Experience in the following techniques:

• Microbiology – bacterial culture, aerobic and anaerobic techniques, biochemical differential identification of bacteria, molecular biology & cloning;

• Immunology – real-time RT-PCR, ELISA, eukaryotic cell culture, primary cell isolation, flow cytometry, working with poultry or other experimental animals;

• Microbiome – Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (TRFLP) analysis, 454 sequencing and bioinformatics platforms for de novo assembly, mapping & amplicon variant detection.

• Demonstrated record of manuscript preparation and publications preferred.
