Position Summary | A postdoctoral research position is available at the UNC Blood Research Center. The Blood Research Center is a nexus of interdisciplinary research of non-malignant blood disorders across UNC. Our current research spans cellular and non-cellular factors that impact hemostasis. Our research focuses on translational research, taking clinical observations to the laboratory to gain better insight into disease pathogenesis and potential treatments for Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN) and Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT). The laboratory offers two ongoing projects: Project 1: Investigating the qualitative cellular changes in MPN that lead to increased thrombotic risk, using both patient samples and mouse models. A JAK2 V617F mouse model of MPN will be used to evaluate pathogenesis of increased thrombosis. Human MPN samples will be collected and banked for single cell RNA sequencing and studies of coagulation potential in order to identify biomarkers of increased thrombotic risk and how current MPN-directed therapies affect those pathways. Project 2: Emerging evidence implicates iron deficiency in a pro-coagulant state. Individuals with HHT are frequently iron deficient due to ongoing bleeding from telangiectasias and have increased thrombotic risk as compared to the general population and as compared to iron deficiency alone. We hypothesize that iron deficiency potentiates the vascular activation phenotype in HHT and are using human samples and mouse models to address this clinically relevant question. At UNC Chapel Hill, we have access to state-of-the-art core equipment and services that enhance our research. We foster a highly team-driven and collegial lab environment. As a member of the UNC Blood Research Center, we are part of a highly collaborative, dynamic, and stimulating research group that makes feasible multidisciplinary research, ensuring an outstanding postdoctoral training experience. |
