Position Information
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The Department of Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill is dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of new and existing knowledge in the broad discipline of Biology by maintaining a high-quality faculty who integrate cutting-edge research and student-focused teaching. We are one of the largest academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. We have over 2,800 majors and we enroll over 5,000 undergraduate students in our classes each year. Our average total annual expenditures exceed $24 million, with nearly half of that coming from grant sponsored research. The department is composed of 50 tenure-track faculty, 10 teaching faculty, 8 research faculty, and numerous active adjunct and emeritus faculty. We currently have 50 graduate students, 40 post-docs and employs approximately 60 additional graduate and undergraduate students from across the university to assist in our teaching and research missions. Our mission is supported by an administrative and technical staff of 20, with an additional 20 staff directly supporting research. Members of the Amy Shaub Maddox lab study the molecular and mechanical underpinnings of animal cell shape. Our discoveries are relevant to fertility, early development, growth, and cancer and other diseases including neutropenias. We primarily use microscopy, quantitative image analysis, and mathematical modeling. Behind the scenes we also do molecular biology, genome editing, and C. elegans developmental biology. |

Position Summary | The PRA will carry out research on the molecular and physical mechanisms of cell shape during oogenesis, cell division and development in the Amy Shaub Maddox lab. The PRA is expected to have familiarity with the following methodologies: model organism maintenance and genetics, high-resolution microscopy, image data analysis, statistics, written and oral scientific communication, and training of colleagues, and to be able to carry out these techniques with a high degree of independence. They will contribute to the completion of federally-funded projects on the molecular and physical mechanisms of non-muscle contractility during cytokinesis and oogenesis, and innovate extensions of this funded work. They will apply for external, independent funding. The PRA will attend weekly group meetings and present their progress orally and via written reports. They will attend local and international conferences and interact with colleagues in a professional, collegial, and trustworthy fashion. They will communicate often and openly with the supervisor to promote preparation for their independent career. |

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | The successful applicant will have extensive experience in molecular and cellular biology, having earned a PhD in one of these or a closely related field. They will have substantive experience (as evidenced by peer-reviewed publication in reputable journals) with the cell cycle and the cytoskeleton. They will be able to work independently with molecular biology technologies and organism maintenance. They will have experience with high-resolution microscopy including confocal, deconvolution, TIRF, and/or light sheet technologies. They will have substantive experience with image data analysis and statistical approaches. They will write research summaries and manuscripts. They will have experience and facility with presentation software such as Adobe Illustrator. They will make oral presentations in lab meetings, local interest groups, and at international conferences. They will have a history of open and professional communication with supervisors and all colleagues. They will pose and test hypotheses, as well as carry out exploratory work.
