Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Environment of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE) focuses on the interface between people and the environment with interdisciplinary programs in air quality, atmospheric processes, human exposure and health effects, and sustainable water resources, drawn from faculty expertise In the physical and life sciences engineering and policy. The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE) is an academic and research department located in the Gillings School of Global Public Health and has 24 faculty, 29 joint and adjunct faculty, 14 administrative staff members, and 7 research staff members. It has about 120 graduate students. The mission of the Gillings School of Global Public Health is to improve public health, promote individual well-being, and eliminate health disparities across North Carolina and around the world.
Position Summary
The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a post-doctoral fellow to conduct collaborative bioaerosol research. The successful candidate will have access to faculty and research groups with extensive experience in environmental and public health microbiology and aerosol science field and laboratory (chamber) research. Specifically, we seek an accomplished junior colleague with training in aerosol science and/or environmental microbiology to work with a newly established chamber system for the controlled study of microbial viability in aerosols.
Roles & Responsibilities: Working with principal investigators, this postdoc will lead experimental design and day-to-day operations of the chamber; provide mentorship and training of graduate research assistants; develop standard operating procedures, methods, and protocols for chamber-based experiments; and perform key equipment maintenance and operation. The post-doc will be expected to lead peer-reviewed publications and contribute to grant proposals. We seek a candidate who will proactively contribute to a diverse, collaborative, positive, supportive, safe, and welcoming laboratory culture.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
The post-doctoral fellow will have received a PhD in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, or a closely aligned field.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Well organized, detail-oriented, able to work independently, and interested in working on interdisciplinary team science.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Valuable background and skills include experience with (bio)aerosol generation, instrumentation and sampling, PCR or culturing, data analysis, modeling, and academic writing.
