Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Neuroscience Center is an inter-departmental research center at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Our mission is to promote neuroscience research at UNC-Chapel Hill with an emphasis on developmental, genetic, and disease-related processes.
The Baldwin lab studies astrocyte cell biology during brain development, as well as the contribution of astrocyte dysfunction to developmental brain disorders. The lab uses cell culture, molecular biology, biochemistry, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, and mouse genetics.
Position Summary
The individual will investigate (1) the function of specific disease-linked astrocyte cell adhesion molecules at the synapse and (2) the contribution of astrocyte dysfunction to neurodevelopmental brain disorders. In the course of this research, the individual will use standard cellular and molecular neuroscience techniques, biochemistry, primary cell culture, mouse genetics, and confocal and super resolution microscopy. In addition to performing high quality research, the individual will assist the PI in writing grant applications, publishing manuscripts, and mentoring and training new lab members.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
PhD or similar degree.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience with primary cell culture, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, and biochemistry. Track record of research productivity and publications in the field of cellular and molecular neuroscience, with a focus on synapse biology or brain disorders. Excellent communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Prefer candidates with experience mentoring and teaching students in an informal laboratory setting.
